Midwinter Break

Synopsis

Based on the novel by Bernard MacLaverty, who co-wrote the screenplay. An empty-nester couple who relocated to Glasgow from Northern Ireland following a traumatic episode during the Troubles take a trip to Amsterdam. Their marriage is seemingly affectionate and comfortable, but Gerry has a not-so-secret drink problem and Stella is unhappy that he does not share her deep Catholic faith. She has a secret agenda for the visit which she has not divulged to him.

Critics Views

“The performances cannot be faulted. Hinds and Manville skilfully convey a relationship founded on the most fragile of intertwining insecurities.”
Irish Times

“Polly Findlay’s adaptation of Bernard MacLaverty’s 2017 novel is a serious attempt to delve into a complex marriage, and fortunately for such heavy material it contains two winning performances from Manville and Hinds .”
San Francisco Chronicle

“Fiercely sad, spiky and wonderfully acted.”
The Guardian
