Dream Horse

Synopsis

Dream Alliance is an unlikely race horse bred by small-town Welsh bartender Jan Vokes (Toni Collette). With no experience, Jan convinces her neighbours to chip in their meagre earnings to help raise Dream in the hopes that he can compete with the racing elites.

(We showed the documentary film Dark Horse about the Dream alliance in November 2015 – this is a comedy/drama based on that same story)

Critics Views

“Like horse racing, filmmaking is a high-risk gamblers’ game, but the team behind Dream Horse, the resulting dramatization of the Vokes’ story, have surely bred a winner with this endearing, determinedly crowd-pleasing adaptation.” The Hollywood Reporter

“We can see every plot point rounding the turn long before the finish line, but that’s OK, because we’re having a (dare I say it) jolly grand time every step of the way.” Chicago Times

“The feelgood Brit-com is back! The ghosts of The Full Monty and Brassed Off have arisen and are thriving in this true-life tale of a Welsh barmaid called Jan Vokes (Toni Collette) who becomes the leader of a quirky small-town syndicate that raises a champion racehorse.” Kevin Maher, The Times

“Yes, it’s schmaltzy, very schmaltzy, but with strong performances by Toni Collette and Damian Lewis the odds are that you’ll love it. Like Chariots of Fire, only with horses.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
