Synopsis

Six years ago Alex Lewis from Stockbridge caught a cold that led to life-threatening septicaemia, multiple amputations and an infection that also affected his face. In defiance of his physical condition, Alex has continued to push his own limits and been involved in ground-breaking projects.  Alex’s story has been featured regularly in the papers and on TV since 2013 when he required life-saving surgery. He has learned to walk again, had facial reconstruction, jumped 15,000ft out of an aeroplane, founded The Alex Lewis Trust, which provides children with revolutionary prosthetics, and become a public speaker.  His ambition was to climb one of Africa’s tallest mountains, despite having lost all four of his limbs and Alex Lewis is a man of his word.

This powerful and moving documentary film follows Alex six years after he lost his arms and legs as he sets out to prove that anything is possible – by climbing the mountain with an off-road, solar-powered mobility handcycle. Alex Lewis – Mountain takes audiences from the A&E department to the design and tech labs of the University of Southampton to the spectacular scenery of the Ethiopian Highlands for Alex’s 14-day expedition of the country’s tallest mountain, Ras Dashen, at a height of 4,550 metres .

The film was directed by the acclaimed and award-winning director, Simon Ratigan, who has worked with everyone from British Gas to Lurpak, the NHS, Save the Children and Amazon

The story told is remarkable and inspirational. The Q&A session reinforced our understanding of the immensity of the achievement especially that the success depended on the commitment of so many people, in all of whom Alex had to have total trust.
It would have been better if the translation words were at the top rather than at the foot of the screen. I had to keep moving my head from side to side to read past the person sat in front of me.
A really excellent film, inspiring, emotional and really makes you appreciate what Alex has gone through and how driven he is to achieve his dreams. I think he should show as many schools as possible to make children realise that nothing should hold you back. I also think all engineering students should see this film.
