Synopsis

Writer and teacher Iris (Naomi Watts) finds her comfortable, solitary New York life thrown into disarray after her closest friend and mentor (Bill Murray) dies suddenly and bequeaths her his beloved 150 lb. Great Dane. The regal yet intractable beast, named Apollo, immediately creates practical problems for Iris, from furniture destruction to eviction notices, as well as more existential ones, his looming presence constantly reminding her of her friend’s problematic choices in both life and death. Yet as Iris finds herself unexpectedly bonding with the animal, she begins to come to terms with her past, her lost friend, and her own creative inner life.

Too slow
Interesting reflection on grief
I think it could have been shorter…
Somehow fitting that the film was set at Christmas. It really was a turkey. We absolutely love Stockbridge Cinema. But by the end of this film it wasn’t just the Great Dane who was suicidal.
Dismal, tedious, mawkish.

It was beautifully acted and filmed but rather too long.

A good and peaceful film
Wonderful story for anyone who really knows dogs
Slow and drawn out. Couldn’t make out all that Val (?), the daughter, was saying. Loved the dog – he was the best character of all!
I think my expectations were off beam. I expected more humour, more dog and less soulful reflection. I found it a slow and even tedious watch at times and wouldn’t recommend to anyone who is in 2 minds about watching. Some in the audience were clearly moved however.
