Moonlight charts the life of Chiron across three defining chapters of his life – starting out as a young black man growing up in turbulent Miami, it follows his ongoing struggles with his sexuality and unstable family life.
As we follow his life through his teenage years and into manhood – the film becomes a much broader inspection into identity as a whole. Showing how his damaged upbringing with drug-addict mother Paula, and high school tussles shape his road ahead.

Critics Views

Ambitious in scope but precise in its execution, this deceptively small-scale character piece reverberates with compassion and insight.
Screen International

Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight pulls you into its introspective protagonist’s world from the start and transfixes throughout as it observes, with uncommon poignancy and emotional perceptiveness, his roughly two-decade path to find a definitive answer to the question, “Who am I?”
The Hollywood Reporter

Moonlight transforms rage and frustration into unadulterated intimacy. In this mesmerizing portrait of a suffocating world, the only potential catharsis lies in acknowledging it as Chiron so deeply wishes he could. Despite the sombre tone, Moonlight is a beacon of hope for the prospects of speaking up.

Moonlight takes the pain of growing up and turns it into hardened scars and private caresses. This film is, without a doubt, the reason we go to the movies: to understand, to come closer, to ache, hopefully with another.
